There’s nobody singing “Day-o” at the Port of Hueneme, just a well-oiled international trade machine — ships, trucks, longshoremen and more– that delivers such variety to our lives.
I buy bananas at the store without thinking how they got there. When photographing for the port, I get a peek at the scale of trade. It’s a marvel that we rarely notice.
Greater Los Angeles alone accounts for more than 16 million people. And the fruit coming in feeds more than Angelenos. Container ships and trucks and chilled warehouses are all part of the grand enterprise.
I shot for about 90 minutes on this day. I like this image because it captured the action: a container being craned down as the trucks await.
